Results of WCS Leipzig 2018

World Championship Series: Leipzig 2018, the first event of the WCS Circuit in the 2018 season, has concluded. The Finnish player Joona "Serral" Sotala defeated his opponent from Germany Tobias "ShoWTimE" Sieber in the decider best-of-seven series.

The tournament featured four stages – three group stages and the playoffs. In the first group stage 64 players were put into 16 GSL groups with best-of-three series, top 2 players from each group advanced to the next stage. The second group stage had the same format but the lower number of players – 32 instead of 64. The third stage kept the same system and featured 32 participating players – 16 players from the second group stage and 16 players from the qualifiers, with best two players from each group qualifying for the single-elimination playoffs bracket with best-of-five regular matches and best-of-seven finals.

ShoWTimE started his run through the ladder from the first group stage – he placed first in his groups in all three stages, with losing only one map in the third group stage. Being the winner of the European qualifiers, Seral was invited directly to the third group stage, in which he placed first in his group with the 4-1 map score. In the playoffs ShoWTimE defeated Namshar (3-2), TRUE (3-0) and Neeb (3-2), while Serral outplayed MaSa (3-0), Nerchio (3-0) and SpeCial (3-1). The Grand Finals concluded with the 4-2 score in favor of the Finnish player, granting him $20,000 and 3,000 WCS Circuit points.

WCS Leipzig 2018 was held by DreamHack on January 26-28 in Leipzig, Germany. 79 players competed for a $101,000 prize pool and WCS Circuit points.
