RIOT Games Dissolute Oceanic Pro League and Close their Sydney Office
RIOT Games have announced that the Oceanic Pro League (OPL) will not resume next year – the company has decided to dissolute the league as “the OPL has not met the goals for the league” and “the market is currently unable to support the league in its current form”. As a result, the RIOT’s office in Sydney, which was primarily focused on the league, will also be closed.
Although there will be no regional league in Oceania, RIOT Games are determined to organize special qualifier events in the region that will allow the local teams to be represented at both MSI and Worlds. Besides that, starting next season Oceania will be added to the competitive territory of the North American league LCS, which means that the players from this region will not be taking import clots in LCS rosters.
OPL has been active since 2017, sending one team to each MSI and Worlds. In the league’s final split the first place was taken by Legacy Esports – the team has been already eliminated from the currently ongoing 2020 Worlds as they failed to make it through the Play-In stage after losing to LGD Gaming in the Round 2 Finals.
